On Friday, January 5th, Healthier Jupiter partnered with Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park for a Walk & Talk at Jonathan Dickinson State Park. Our group of 34 met at the Kimbell Education Center, where we explored the interactive displays before setting off on our walk. Park rangers guided our group on a walk of the river trail (behind the Kimbell Education Center). Along the .5 mile nature trail we learned about the park’s ecology, the Loxahatchee River’s cultural significance, and, of course, some nature jokes. Our group braved fallen branches, and a little mud to be active and learn about the area!
Our group then made their way over to The River Store located in the picnic area. With a beautiful view of the river in front of us, we enjoyed some healthy treats of veggies with hummus prepared by the on-site food concessions. Stay tuned to The River Store and Food Concessions as they plan to incorporate more healthy foods into their menu. We also learned about all the amazing things going on at Jonathan Dickinson State Park thanks to Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park.
Jonathan Dickinson State Park has so much to offer the community. Located just north of Jupiter in Tequesta, this park encompasses one of the most significant and diverse natural ecosystems remaining in South Florida. The park contains 13 natural communities, including sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, mangroves and river swamps. In additional to several hiking and biking trails (paved and off-road trails), visitors can rent kayaks, canoes and boats at The River Store. Many of the programs and improvements come directly from Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park, Inc., a Citizen Support Organization (CSO) that serves to improve the visitor programs and physical needs of the park. Visit Friends of Jonathan Dickinson State Park’s website to find out how you can become a member, and participate in their fun events! Or follow them on Facebook!
